CBS Soap Operas

Soap Operas fifty years have mesmerized and entertained the television viewing world. We have experienced tragedies, romance and attraction. The first television soap opera aired on CBS in 1956. The soap opera was the ever popular Guiding Light. Guiding Light began on radio 1930. It switched to television in 1956.

CBS has and continues to air many great soap operas. CBS currently airs Young and the Restless, Glamor, As World Turns and Guiding Light.

In 1973, The Young and the Restless premiered. It became quite successful very quickly and still pulling in millions of viewers today. The story line began with the abbot and Newman families are fighting it out in the boardroom in business. I remember when it first aired. My mother was very faithful to the CBS soap operas. When the Search for Tomorrow "was taken out of the air after 30 years, she had a seizure. Many viewers have seen Young and the Restless from the very beginning. It has won several Emmy Awards the other soaps currently on television and has been # 1 in 16 years. The longest running characters on the show is played by Katherine Chancellor Jeanne Cooper. She celebrated 30 years on the show in January 2004.

The Bold and the Beautiful is a half-hour soap that is centered on the Forrester and Spectra families. They are families that struggle in the fashion world. It first appeared on the fourteenth anniversary of the young and the Restless premiered in 1987. The young and restless and The Bold and the Beautiful has developed the story lines of both shows together at times. Forrester's know the Beautiful Lauren Finmore living in Genoa City. Both shows have also had to deal with bouts of psychotic Sheila Carter.

As The World Turns is also a long-running CBS soap. ATWT also aired the 1956th While some shows have made changes every year for their opening visuals ATWT has always had a globe. It may look has changed over the years but the world is still there. ATWT is loved partly because there are still indigenous people to play some of the characters have had their beginning. These characters are so well known and loved by the viewers they almost seem like family.
Donald Hastings has been on show since 1956, he plays the role of Bob Hughes. He holds the record for playing the same TV role so long as any other actors. Helen Wagner has played matriarch Nancy Hughes, with few interruptions, since the show's debut in 1956. Her role would make her the person to play a role longer than anyone else, but she has taken some breaks. Although she has acted in 50 years, she has never won an Emmy Award, but she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2004. And finally, Eileen Fulton, she is famous for his role has Lisa Grimaldi a role she has played off and on since 1956.

ATWT takes place in Oakdale. Many of the characters are rich or Police Agents. The police agent aspect adds another spin to the soaps. Fans love mysteries and the handsome and charming police agents who come to help from others or capture the bad guys.

This brings us back to Guiding Light was popular on the radio for over fifteen years, and since 1956 has been loved by viewers. One thing that the CBS soaps on the air is sadly romantic stories and devotion to keep entertaining fans and anxiously await each day's episode.

Some will argue with me that CBS is not so popular or that I'm biased because I see these soaps and to an extent, this may be true, but facts are NBC has won 18 Emmys, has won 80 ABC and CBS has won the 99th The young and the Restless is the most popular of all soap with a rating of 4.2 seen by around 4.5 million people and As the World Turns and Guiding Light has been on since 1956.
