Newborn dies after hand cut by docs in hospital

A three-day-old baby, whose right hand was cut allegedly due to the negligence of doctors during a caesarian operation at a government

hospital in Udaipur, died in the hospital on Friday.

District collector, Udaipur, Anant Kumar had constituted a four member committee headed by doctor Sharda Goyal of RNT Medical College to conduct inquiry into the case.

However, the inquiry committee in its report said no negligence was found on the part of doctors. The report also said no cut was found on the arm of the child but it could have happened as the baby was premature — seven and a half-months-old.

According to sources, the baby was born to Babli (25), wife of Ranjeet Kumar, a resident of Rajsamand district, at Pannadhay Government Hospital on Wednesday. During the delivery, doctors allegedly cut the right arm of the newborn which led to heavy bleeding. The doctors, however, did not take the issue seriously, said the family members.

Alleging gross negligence on the part of doctors, the relatives said when they requested the doctors to do the needful, the latter assured them that there was nothing to worry as it was a minor injury.

When they repeatedly pleaded the doctors, they put a bandage on the baby's arm and then admitted him to the paediatric ward. However, the bleeding continued and the baby was put on artificial respiration but died on Friday night.

Meanwhile, district collector Anant Kumar told TOI that the inquiry committee's report has been forwarded to principal secretary Chandra Mohan Meena and further action would be taken on the basis of directives issued by the government.
