Attracting Purple Martins

Looking for a backyard challenge? Consider investing in a Birdhouse, which will attract North American purple martins. These young beauties keep the mosquito population in check, and is fascinating to see in your backyard. Once you have established a colony, they will come back to visit every year.


Purple martins are unique in that they rely on man-made shelter to produce offspring. But they are unique and have many predators such as starlings and sparrows, to attract and retain a martin colony something of a challenge. There are a few things to consider when putting up your Purple Martin Birdhouse, which will help your efforts.


Firstly, it is important that the shelter is available for Martins, as soon as they enter your area. Find out what month they come to your particular climate zone. Besides a great location, make your Birdhouse inviting. Choose a white or light colored Martin Birdhouse to keep it cool. Make sure it is well ventilated. You can even give some straw in each room to make it extra cozy. Provide nesting materials such as straw, twigs or pine needles in accessible areas, so your purple martins to build their nests. It can not hurt to cook available on a platform bird feeder.
