After the Samajwadi Party and Congress Party's street shows all held within a month, it was the turn of the state BJP to flex its muscles. The impressive turnout at the demonstration and proposed march to the state assembly on Thursday came as a huge surprise even to the party leaders who had neither seen or expected such a response in recent past. Thousands of workers poured into the city to participate in the protest against the price rise in what is being interpreted as a grand homecoming for former national president of the party, Rajnath Singh.
Singh led the aborted march in company of his other colleagues Kalraj Mishra, Murli Manohar Joshi, Vinay Katiyar and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. The six-hour long political drama had a predictable end - water cannon and tear gas shell lobbing by Lucknow police which incidentally retaliated returning the volley of stone showers aimed at them from the agitating workers. Scores of workers received injury in the stone pelting match amidst moments of heightened anxiety when an additional SP was held hostage by the crowd. The officer roughed up by agitators, was released after the intervention of Rajnath Singh.
