If you've always wanted to have a Macaw parrot, then you should be aware that they require copious amounts of work and care. But if you're serious, then you'll find that these birds are absolutely beautiful and incredibly intelligent. They can live for up to fifty years, so you've got plenty of wonderful years ahead of you. Check out my tips and suggestions for proper care and you're Macaw will be happy and healthy for years to come.
1. Make sure that your parrot has a healthy well balanced diet. You will need to feed him or her plenty of fruits and vegetables. You should also have plenty of sprouted seeds, cuttlebone and mineral block. Make that all of the food is incredibly fresh and should your bird reject the food; be sure to remove it from the cage before it spoils. Also, if you can afford to, purchase organic food. It will be much better for your Macaw in the long run because he or she won't be ingesting potentially harmful pesticides and additives.
2. If you can, encourage your bird to drink from a water bottle rather than a dish. This will prevent mold from building up, which can be deadly for your bird.
3. Make sure your Macaw gets plenty of interaction daily. These birds are incredibly demanding and they require a lot of attention and care. If they don't receive plenty of attention, they are likely to become ill. They will be a great addition to your family, just make sure there are people home everyday to take him or her out the bird cage for play.
4. The bird cage you purchase must be large enough for your bird. Macaws are large parrots, and the cage you purchase should be large enough for your bird to fully stretch out its wings. In general, Macaws typically have a wing span of about 3 feet, so keep that in mind.
