Early detection key to tackling breast cancer

Breast cancer is rapidly rising in India claiming many lives due to lack of early detection and low awareness among the women.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,00,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year and more than 50 per cent at an advanced stage.

Onserving the World Cancer Day on Thursday, Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation (UBF) in partnership with Krishna Institute of Medical Science will be organising a free cancer screening for 200 underprivileged women from the Ranga Reddy district free of cost, with a contribution of Rs 2 lakh contributed by UBF.

“Breast cancer can not only be cured but prevented if women are made more aware. Regular check-up can help in early detection. Using our mammogram we will be screening 200 women and if they are detected with breast cancer we will also provide them with free treatment,” said Dr P Raghu Ram, director, KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases.

Celebrated dancer and Padmashree Ananda Shankar Jayant, animal activist Amala Akkineni, Tollywood actress Saloni and fitness expert Dinaz Vertvetwala were also present at the event.

“This Ugadi, I request all the men to buy their sisters, mothers, wives a mammogram screening instead of the pattu saree,” said Ananda Shankar Jayant, who likes to call herself a breast cancer conqueror instead of a survivor.
