Bihar can't challenge Lalu's acquittal

In a huge relief to Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi in the disproportionate assets case, the Supreme Court said Thursday Bihar government is not competent enough to challenge the acquittal of Lalu and his wife by the trial court when they were prosecuted by the CBI.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his wife challenging the decision of the Patna High Court admitting the appeal of Bihar government against their acquittal in a disproportionate assets case.

"I am very happy today," said the RJD leader, in response to the judgement. "We welcome SC's verdict. I believe in the judiciary."

The CBI had booked Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi on charges of amassing property worth Rs 46 lakh above their legal sources of income in the fodder scam case.

Lalu was sent to the Bihar military police guest house on judicial remand in July 1997 and again in October 1998...He spent a day in the Beur jail in the disproportionate assets case in November 2000.
