Three crack teams set up

Price rise has become a huge political problem for the government with the Left stepping up pressure and holding protests. (Read: Price rise: Nationwide protests by Left) In a late night development the Prime Minister met a group of ten Chief Ministers to discuss the problem. The brainstorming has resulted in the setting up of three crack teams to help tackle the issue.

The three working groups include:

    * A working group on agriculture production which will be headed by the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will focus on how to improve productivity.

    * Gujarat CM Narendra Modi will head a group that will find out why there is a huge gap between what you pay for essential commodities at the neighbourhood store and what the farmer gets who produces it in the first place. In other words, the team will examine the cause for difference between retail and farm gate prices.

    * Montek Singh Ahluwalia will look at how to improve the delivery mechanism including the Public Distribution System, introduce technology and find out just how many Below Poverty Line (BPL) families need to get it.

Sharad Pawar, Agriculture Minister, says "They will submit their reports in one and half to two months.."

However, all is not well as states and the Centre continue to differ.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, says "The government of India has so many estimates of BPL families, they should decide on one figure and give them benefits..also giving just foodgrains and wheat under food security is not enough..they must also give pulses and sugar.."
