Neyveli Lignite plans ultra mega power project bids

Mon Jun 22, 2009

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Neyveli Lignite Corp (NLC) plans to bid for ultra-mega power projects (UMPPs), a foray into wind and hydro power generation and to develop coal blocks under public-private partnership, it said on Monday.

The state-run company with 24 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) coal-mining capacity and 2,490 MW of power generation capacity, is also planing to form a unit -- NLC Videsh, for acquiring overseas coal assets, it said in a statement.

The company did not provide any time line for these initiatives.

The coal-miner-cum-power-producer is likely to start lignite production from its Rajasthan-based Barsingsar mine in July 2009, taking its total mining capacity to 30.6 MTPA by 2010, the company said.

On the thermal power generation front, its first unit of 250-MW Barsingsar Thermal Power project is likely to be commissioned in October 2009 and the second unit in January 2010.

This would take its total power generation capacity to 3,240 MW by 2010, it said.

NLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd, its joint venture with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, is setting up a 1,000 MW power plant at Tuticorin at a cost of 49.09 billion rupees.

The plant is expected to be commissioned in FY13, the statement said.

NLC's FY09 net profit declined 25.5 percent on year to 8.21 billion rupees on a net sales fall of 6.86 percent to 28.25 billion rupees, it said in a result-statement issued earlier on Monday.
